I'm using a spreadsheet that I got from a member of the Toronto DRP club. It's not quite ready for public consumption, but once it's been tweeked to be user-friendly to those without advanced Excel skills, I'll give George a copy to post in the tools section.

So I read an interesting book on dividends the other day. I'm sure if you have been dripping in the states for awhile you will have heard of it. It is called The Little Book of Big Dividends. I especially found the way they rate their stocks informative. After reading the book it refers you to numerous places where you can get useful information for free. I especially like the website. Www (dot) bigsafedividends (dot) com. It updates weekly the best dividend stocks in USA.

I have been looking at different sources of information to help me determine the best drip stocks to invest in and when to put more money in or less. After looking at the bigsafedividends website I was wondering if there was a canadian equivalent. I would prefer a free source of information.

I was also looking at the value line investment survey. I know you have to pay for online access, but my public library has the weekly periodicals available for free. Ive never used value line before and wondered how it was for Canadian stocks.

Basically I'm looking for sources to help me pick my drips in Canada.

It's a rounding error, especially noticeable when the amount of dividends is low, and worse with CIBC Mellon which only gives 3 decimals. There really isn't a fix. As others have mentioned, put in the correct amount of dividend and the number of shares you received, and let Quicken calculate the price. This is why I use a separate spreadsheet to calculate my ACB, because I don't trust that Quicken is doing it correctly.

We knew that the change from Income Trust to Corporation structure was going to possibly impact dividend distributions ...

Commencing with Penn West's September distribution paid on October 15, 2010 to unitholders of record on September 30, 2010, Penn West will be reducing the current distribution of $0.15 per unit per month to $0.09 per unit per month. This new distribution level represents a cash-on-cash yield of approximately 6 percent based on the closing price today of $19.00 on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

[Website Address]

Cookies

I think something else might be confusing Rene, TELUS's dual class share structure:

T & T.A

The T.A might be confusing in light of the ".UN" designation for trusts.

TELUS, awhile back did announce it would convert to a Trust which quickly boosted it's price quickly to over $60. This announcement was the tipping point for our Finance Minister, Mr. Flagherty to change the rules covering trusts known as the Halloween Massacre. TELUS shares fell just as quickly as can be seen here if you set the chart to 5 or 10 years:

[Website Address]

So TELUS never converted to a Trust and remained a corporation.

The dual class structure was created to meet foreign ownership limitations. AS DRIP shares can be dilutive the PLAN only allows for reinvestment in T.A non-voting shares so foreign interests cannot control TELUS out right.

There has been some speculation that if the government relaxes foreign ownership limitations TELUS will cancel the T.A shares by converting them to T (voting) shares. It does remain speculation though.

OB
