...BMO just reported a $669 million profit, up $112 million from a year ago. You'd think that would be good news, except the analysts had predicted more, so now because some analysts were off on their predictions (which they seem to be over 90% of the time), the stock is taking a beating instead of everyone going, hey profits are UP 20%!!!!...

That's how the market generally works, the current price should be reflective of all currently available information. If new information comes out that changes picture ie. like in this case lower than expected earnings, the market will price that in.

I'd recommend reading up on the efficient-market hypothesis (you can find on wikipedia). Basically, the theory is you can never have above average returns unless you know something that not everyone else knows. Hence why insider trading is illegal.

It doesn't get the whole picture of market movements, but it can definitely be applied to earnings calls/future outlook.

PALO ALTO, Calif. & FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- HP (NYSE:HPQ) and 3PAR Inc. today announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement under which HP will purchase 3PAR, a leading global provider of utility storage, through a cash tender offer of $33 per share in cash, or an enterprise value of $2.35 billion. The transaction has been approved by the boards of directors of both companies.

Combining 3PAR’s leading-edge utility storage products with HP’s existing storage solutions will strengthen HP’s unparalleled storage, server and networking portfolio. 3PAR will accelerate HP’s highly successful Converged Infrastructure strategy by driving growth in the fast-growing virtual data center and cloud computing markets. HP’s global presence, commitment to innovation and proven track record of integrating acquisitions will provide growth opportunities for 3PAR going forward.

“HP and 3PAR is a winning combination that will accelerate HP’s Converged Infrastructure strategy and bolster our ability to provide customers with the industry’s highest levels of performance, efficiency and reliability,” said Dave Donatelli, executive vice president and general manager, Enterprise Servers, Storage and Networking, HP. “We intend to invest in 3PAR’s technology to create long-term value for our stakeholders.”

“As part of HP, 3PAR’s agile, efficient storage solutions will truly thrive, particularly given HP’s ability to accelerate investment in our products and reach new customers around the world,” said David Scott, president and chief executive officer, 3PAR. “3PAR has built a reputation for delivering enterprises and cloud computing service providers the ability to do more with less. HP’s global reach, strong routes to market and our shared culture of innovation will allow even more organizations to experience the transformative value of 3PAR’s technology.”

3PAR also announced that it has terminated its merger agreement with Dell Inc. and paid Dell the $72 million termination fee required to be paid to Dell as a condition to terminating the merger agreement.

HP’s cash tender offer commenced on August 27, 2010 and it is scheduled to expire at 12:00 midnight, New York City time on September 24, 2010, subject to customary tender offer conditions being satisfied. The final closing of the acquisition is expected to occur by the end of the calendar year. HP also announced today the satisfaction of the conditions to its tender offer related to (1) the termination of 3PAR’s merger agreement with Dell and the execution of a definitive merger agreement with HP, and (2) the inapplicability of Section 203 of the Delaware General Corporation Law to HP’s tender offer and proposed merger with 3PAR.

Kathy

george :

P.S. Just thought I'd mention that if you happen to be using a browser like Google Chrome, you will see a little nub in the lower right corner of the box where you post your comments. By clicking and dragging on this nub you can resize the area in which you type.

Never noticed before but Safari has it too, as well as Google Chrome.
Firefox and Opera don't have a resizing tab but if you keep on typing, it scrolls.
We are investing but with $10k going to TFSAs and more than $5k going into a spousal RRSP and another $5k going into my pension plan, there isn't much left over for DRIPs.

We only have a small amount of cash in the RRSPs and we'll probably pick up one or two US companies if there is a buying opportunity.

Since I starting DRIPping so long ago, I got into some companies when they were still splitting a few times each year as they were growing their companies - EX: HD, INTC, JCI, BLS (which merged into T) and JNPR (no div).

A split does not make a company worth more but it makes it easier for the small investor to put their money in that company due to the lower price. Some coppanies keep their prices highh on purpose, Ex: BDX, MMM.

During the boom times, many of my DRIPs split at least once during the year.

Kathy

Like a few others here I was convinced after the last crash that my money should not be left in the hands of anyone who doesn't have my best interest at heart. I began reading about drips and only in the last 2 months have I started placing money into the market.

I too missed the rally and just bought a fair amount of JNJ right before this last tumble. I have about 30 drips but I only really consider half of them truly worthwhile for the long run. I strongly believe in increasing dividends, as well as splits and buybacks.

All the recent doom and gloom in the news has me excited and I'm looking forward to acquiring more US shares and Cdn financial shares. Eventually I would like to expand my investing style but for the moment I am looking to maximize my purchase prices of additional stocks.

My goal is to retire in 25 years, I'm almost 40 and I am working on getting into a new career after a major setback, so for me, timing and averaging down is very important.

Hi Everyone, this is a great thread.

I stopped investing in 2008 because of fear. I was in cash and missed a huge rally.
I will keep funding all my savings(rsp, resp, tfsa, drips). I have money set aside 25% for stock purchasing in my brokerage to take advantage of the dips and if the market falls, I am thinking about SMITH maneuver.

I figure I have a long investment horizon and should be able to wait out the storm.

Qui
