Thanks for everyone's response. I've called around and here' what I learnt....

(1) Usually a MLA in smaller towns/remote area will take a course and become a Commissioner for Oaths when there is no Public Notary in their area (i.e. not in MetroVancouver),

(2) If it just happens that your MLA (depends on where you live) was already a lawyer before they became a MLA, then you can try to see if they will do it for you

(3) I called around (made 3 calls) and found a notary public to do it for $10 tax included =) The other two was $29+HST and $20 tax included) I think $10 is fair for the service because it was only 3 mins on the phone and 7 mins of his time for this simple transaction...(ID check, witnessing the signing of our signatures and giving us his seals/stamp), $29 was way too much...

Once again thanks for everyone's input! Another monkey off my back =)

Wilson

thanks for the responses. The notary fee will cost more than the certificate itself...I will try giving my MP/MLA a call (can they act as a Commissioner for Oaths?)

Wilson

So I'm at a loss of what to do.

Here's my situation:

I sent, by regular mail, a bunch of transfer forms to CIBC Mellon which were rejected due to not having a Declaration of Beneficial Ownership for EIF. They returned it all to me and I sent everything back again with the proper forms and then it was supposedly lost according to CIBC Mellon so I ventured to get new transfer forms and signature guarantees along with declaration forms. I sent this all in again YESTERDAY by registered mail.

Today, I receive a package from CIBC Mellon (my supposed lost package that was never received) returning all the old stuff I sent in along with a share certificate for the 6 shares I've been trying to transfer to those that have paid me since July.

So my question is, what happens now? I've wasted a lot of postage in order to get this transfer done but I'm very irate at CIBC Mellon at this point.

I had the same thing happen to me last year. And you must get a notary to fill it out (a lot of work for a lot of cost, but eventually it'll straighten out). It's a pain.

Computershare said my first BCE certificate was sent by "First Class Insured Mail" on July 7 but I have never received it in the mail. They said they could replace it for free because I have received it; however, when I received the package, I found out that I need to fill out the form "in the presence of a Notary Public or Commissioner for Oaths with the appropriate seal/stamp affixed".

I am in the Vancouver, BC area, do I have to pay a notary public for this or can I go to some government agencies and get it done for free or cheaper? (I called ServiceBC in Maple Ridge and they said they aren't commissioned for this kind of documents...)

Any advice here? Thanks!

Wilson

ASAP does have an American website as well.

www.asapchecks.com

I don't know how they compare to other suppliers such as Walmart, but I did a quick search and 200 cheques was 10$, 400 cheques for 18$ (US site). I see in the contact us mailing address that they are based in Alexandria Bay, New York. The Canadian ASAP is on the other side of the St. Lawrence River in Ganonoque, Ontario. I've used them twice and not had any issues. For personal cheques the savings isn't huge, but for business cheques ASAP is like half the price the banks charge

Imagine my surprise when I found out that Wal Mart do it -- $5.96 for 150 basic checks.

http://www.walmartchecks.com/

Drip on,
Arthur

Definitely shop around with a list of needs.

I decided on Questrade due to low commissions (and since negotiated lower commissions again...due to my volume). I didn't need any other service other than being able to buy and sell stocks and options so my ONLY cost is the commission (now HST on free stuff that I use though). I also didn't need any hand holding so paying extra for "customer service" was about the last thing on my mind. Even the odd time I did need it it was adequate, it's even better now as they have a dedicated line for high volume accounts with separate email and chat support.

Sometime I may switch to something like Interactive Brokers as they have better commission structures, options and futures trading and an iphone trading application. But that is another story.

Jeff.

I don't mind the commission at iTrade because I don't trade that often and their service is EXCELLENT. It won't be long either until our commissions will drop to $9.99, so that won't be unreasonable. If we were trading more often, it might matter, but at this time, it doesn't. I agree with SOP. First decide what type of service you need and see what that will cost you.
